Tool I Can’t Live Without: My Food Scale

If there’s one kitchen tool I use nearly every single day, it’s my trusty food scale. I honestly couldn’t live without it. From meal prep to baking, it’s my secret weapon for making sure everything is precise, organized, and perfectly portioned.

For starters, I buy meat in bulk and use my food scale to portion it out by weight before sealing it with my food sealer (but that’s a topic for another article!). This not only helps me save money but also keeps my freezer organized and efficient. No more guessing how much meat is in each package—I know exactly what I have at a glance.

When it comes to baking, my food scale is a game-changer. I’m a stickler for accuracy, especially with ingredients like flour. Flour can vary greatly depending on how it’s measured, and using too much or too little can lead to disappointing results. By measuring in grams, I’m confident I’m using exactly the right amount, every time. And it’s not just flour—I even weigh sugar, particularly brown sugar, which can be tricky to measure by volume. For bread baking, weighing ingredients is crucial to achieving the perfect dough consistency, and it helps me follow the recipe to a tee.

I’ve tried several scales over the years, but my favorite is the KitchenAid KQ909 Dual Platform Food Scale. It is incredibly precise and has great features. One of it’s unique features is the two-line backlit LCD readout calculates weights for both platforms at the same time. Plus it is a Good Housekeeping Award Winner.

Another thing I love using my food scale for is pasta. I buy it in bulk, and weighing out the amount I need for each meal has been a total game-changer, especially for spaghetti. I’m always guessing how much is enough, but now, I can weigh it and know I’m cooking the perfect amount—no more excess or waste.

Another excellent food scale is the Zibet Rechargeable Digital Kitchen Scale. It is powered by a USB Rechargeable lithium battery and 2 AAA Batteries. It is reasonably priced and an Amazon’s Choice.

Portion control is another big reason I rely on my food scale. Sometimes I overestimate what I think a portion of chips or pretzels should be, and the scale keeps me honest. Whether I’m enjoying a snack or prepping a full meal, it ensures I’m sticking to the right portion sizes and not overindulging.

I also make my own candy from time to time, and my scale is indispensable for weighing chocolate. Since I buy it in bulk, the scale makes it so easy to measure exactly what I need without any hassle.

Overall, my food scale has become an indispensable part of my kitchen routine. It not only saves me time and money but also ensures I’m following recipes with precision. Whether I’m portioning meat, measuring flour for baking, controlling my snack intake, or making candy, it’s the tool I reach for almost daily. If you don’t already have one, I highly recommend adding a food scale to your kitchen arsenal—you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it!
